Baraka bounced around the inside of the Armored Personnel Carrier. All he wanted was a hot show er and chow. During the last six standard earth days, the platoon had spent ninety percent of its time inside the APC.

On the trek to Gold City, the 402nd Urban Armored Division stopped twice to free a couple of small towns from AI. Most of the trip, they were strapped in the APC as it moved across the barren wasteland. He mentally prepared himself for combat, having concluded the diagnostics for his suit and two armor drones he commanded. He closed that window in his HUD, and then closed his eyes.

Six heavily armored troopers of the 402nd sat in the rear of the APC. Heavy infantry needed the extra space with the armor and weapon requirements. Staff Sergeant Kenya Baraka swiveled from inside the Hull, to see the other nine soldiers. Driver sat in the front left seat to control the vehicle; the weapons operator rode shotgun. The Lieutenant sat behind the pilot seat along the wall, Baraka opposite him behind the weapons operator. The crew chief sat on the left side of the ramp with the rest of the soldiers aligned along each wall, separated by two folded armored drones.

“Hey Sarge. You ready to kill toasters?” asked Corporal Wedge.

“You know it, Wedge. I was born ready to dispense hurt and pain. The real question is, your lazy sack of pig puke ready?”

“Yes sir, I am ready sir. I heard this city is almost all Playa. If I find my dream girl in this city, do I have your permission to marry her? Playa girls are my favorite. Golden green skin, large breasts, skinny waist. My type of girl. Plus, they are always naked or barely clothed. You have to love the green skin augment. ‘Here baby, you need some energy? Stand outside topless to soak up the sun rays like plants do.’ Genius.”

“I thought you loved me,” said Corporal Pink.

He chuckled. “You can be my second wife. We can go one of those co-op marriages like the Kajeune do. Or maybe one of those pack marriages like the Drake. I mean you like girls too, so we can pick that one together. Yeah, I like that one.”

“Damn Pink. You’re demoted. I guess you played too hard to get. You missed your window of opportunity,” said Wiz.

Pink rolled her eyes, hand on hip, and laughed. “Well, maybe I will find a husband in the city too. Tall, low grav born, and rich. He can spoil me for saving his life. I also do not like girls. Stop saying that. Everyone tried Kajuene once. It doesn’t what roll you get.” Squad members chuckled.

“What did you roll?” asked Rice.

Pink laughed some more. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“No, Wedge and Pink. After you are no longer in the same unit, you are to get married. That’s an order.”

Baraka’s squad was tense, so he let them banter.
